Quest for new music.

Ever feel like you're in a rut? I do. And I think the best cure would be some new-found grooves to rock my boat. Know what I mean?

I need some INSPIRATION! So I'm asking: does anyone know of any music that I haven't already heard of?

For the life of me I can't remember whose blog linked to Corinne Bailey Rae, but it's got me thinking about music and how good it feels to hear something new, something a little kick-ass wonderful.

Lately I find myself more interested in female artists (although I'm not opposed to good music by males either!).
Will you help me in my quest?

...Cuz music is even better when introduced by friends.

What kind of music do you listen to?

Regina Spektor and Rachael Yamagata are both excellent, excellent. And the newest Fiona Apple (Extraordinary Machine) is very good.

Kristine...it doesn't matter what kind of music I normally listen to cuz I'm looking for NEW music. I like a lot of stuff, but usually lean towards folk-ethnic-jazz...I'm pretty open minded. I bet you have something I'd like. :)

Amber--You. Are. Awesome! I have a Regina Spektor CD that a friend gave me--and, yes, I agree she's excellent. I haven't heard of Rachael Yamagata and although I've heard OF Fiona Apple, I've never actually sat down to listen to her music. Can't wait to check them out!

Hi Jessie! It was so good to hear from you!!!!! Your new house looks great :) I found "unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield, Jewel"s new stuff and James Blunt to have touched my soul. Not sure if they are "ass kicking" LOL

Here are some suggestions. None of this music is recently released. I haven’t found any new music recently that excites me...

• The Blackeyed Peas “Elephunk” makes me happy. It reminds me of Deee-lite’s Infinity Within album.
• I recently discovered Bobby McFerrin’s album Medicine Music and downloaded the song “Common Threads”.
• We play the Cocteau Twins “ Heaven or Las Vegas” in the car. It’s an old album but I really like it. It has an abstract element to it.
• There’s also Ella Fitzgerald’s “Pure Ella” – I call this dreamy romantic music because she is so honest about her feelings like the way women talked in old black and whit movies.
• Tracy Chapman’s Telling Stories? Have you heard it? I love Tracy Chapman.

Have fun! Hope you find something you like!

Tammy: Every time I visit your blog I feel instantly soothed by the music. I think we have the same taste in music so I'm looking forward to checking out your suggestions.

Loralee: Ah, come on now! You underestimate just how open-minded I really am. Jackson Brown, Prince, and the Bee Gees are a few of my favorites. You are not the only one with questionable tastes in music. :)-

Greenishlady: I never heard of them either. Thanks for the link! I'm headed there next. :)

Kristine: See! I knew you had something for me! I love Ella and Tracy Chapman too--although I haven't heard her newest stuff. I love reading your descriptions of the music too. I think I should make a "Kristine's Favorites CD" and play it while making art in the studio.

Everyone: I think it's kinda cool the way this compilation is coming together. Thank you for your suggestions!

luv,
j.

Jessie, I second Tammy's suggestion of Natasha Bedingfield. We heard her recently on "So You Think You Can Dance" and just loved her voice, her music.

And here's a name I keep seeing over and over: India.Arie. Of course, I'm so out of it, I've never actually heard any of her stuff, but according to People magazine, she's incredible :)

Good luck!

Ever listened to Eastmountainsouth? Or what about Fisher? They were totally randoms I came across a couple years ago, and still love them to this day. Eastmountainsouth actually has a couple songs on soundtracks now...Elizabethtown soundtrack for one.
I'll keep thinking and send you more as they come to me.
Love ya,
